The Couple I Thought Would Never Make It
I remember, shortly after law school, I attended the wedding of one of my classmates. He and his fiancée, Kelley, had met in college and then continued to date, on-and-off, through law school. My friend repeatedly broke up with Kelley, enthusiastically dating a variety of younger women for a few months, only to return to Kelley’s waiting arms.
As luck would have it, this guy was also fired from his big law firm internship for sexually harassing a partner.
So, when I received the wedding announcement shortly after our graduation, I was somewhat surprised. The ceremony and reception were lavish in true Boca Raton Jewish style. But what stands out most in my memory were the mutters of my friends as the beautiful bride walked down the aisle, questioning her sanity. And when the rabbi asked if anyone in the audience knew of a reason why these two shouldn’t be united, there were audible giggles amongst the crowd, although no one volunteered an objection.
They Just Celebrated Their Fortieth Wedding Anniversary
On that day, if I’d had to bet, I’d have put my money on my friend’s marriage not lasting too long. However, fast forward nearly forty years, and they’re still married, living the American dream in a South Florida mansion, with two grown twin boys and a singleton, who’ve provided them with seven grandchildren amongst them. My friend works successfully at his own law firm, while his bride, who stayed home “to raise the kids,” has long since given up pretending to work.
While I can’t say that they are the happiest couple I know, they’ve made it this long, and far longer than many of my friends.

I know that I’m interested to see how my marriage compares to those of all the Kardashians.
